Position Summary:GeoFORCE Alaska is hiring Counselors for the 2018 summer academy (May 30-June 7, 2018) to ensure the safety of student participant, model team-building skills, coordinate groups of students, and provide instruction at field stops.


GeoFORCE Alaska is seeking Day Counselors for the 2018 summer academy (May 30-June 7, 2018). GeoFORCE Alaska is a field-based, summer geoscience program for high school students from Alaska’s North Slope and Northwest Arctic Boroughs. Day Counselors will accompany students and other staff on a 10-day field academy to Oregon. Positions require the ability to work long hours, travel to the Lower 48, and work with other adult staff members to create a positive learning environment.

Day Counselor duties include: Deliver instruction and guide student learning during lectures, review sessions, study opportunities and field stops. Coordinate groups of students throughout the day. Assist Educational Coach during review sessions, exam sessions and grading. Assist Instructor during lectures and field work. Participate in pre-trip orientation sessions. Promote healthy team dynamics and positive peer interaction. Help load/unload luggage. Help maintain and organize meeting areas and community spaces. Participate in nightly staff meetings and planning. Other duties as assigned.

  • Attendance at a full-day staff training on May 27, 2018 is mandatory.

  • Additional online trainings must be completed prior to academy start date.

  • Valid driver’s license is required.

  • Must be willing to provide a copy of driving record and obtain UAF driver’s certification upon request.

  • Lodging includes hotels and dormitories. Accommodation may be shared with other adult staff.

  • Must pass a criminal background check prior to offer of employment; no felony arrest or conviction involving minors.

  • Alcohol, tobacco, and drug-free; UAF is a drug-free workplace.

Candidates will be evaluated based on the suitability of their academic experience, previous counseling experience with GeoFORCE or similar youth programs, and potential for providing high quality instruction to rural high school students. Applicants must be able to work longer than standard 8-hour workday. Ability to demonstrate, thorough past experience, proven mature judgement, a high degree of initiative and personal responsibility, strong team player, and effective problem solving skills while in the field.

CPR/First Aid or Lifeguard certification a plus.

Required Experience, Education or Training: Previous youth development or counseling experience is preferred. Requires a valid AK driver’s license. Bachelor’s degree or enrollment in an undergraduate program in a related field is preferred.
